The students earned their goal party by completing their goals for the month of March. We decided to do an activity centered around Earth Day. The students were allowed to work in groups. Each group chose an animal from the list of endangered species and created a poster. The staff members brought snacks for the students. Mrs. Sullivan brought some different kinds of food for the students to try. One of them was a coconut. Luckily, one of our students is an expert at opening a coconut.

Canary Rescue

There is now a canary at the Flint Hills Learning Center. Her name is Delilah. Another canary picked all of the feathers off of her head, so she is bald right now. Mrs. Sullivan felt sorry for the poor bald bird, so she bought her and gave her a home. Her feathers will grow back.

We had a Mardi Gras Party today. In order to earn the party, 75% of the students had to meet at least half of their goals for the month of February. They spent the morning making posters of Mardi Gras and New Orleans. Mrs. Sullivan provided the beads, masks, and hats. At noon, we had lunch. Each staff member brought some authentic food for the feast. We had shrimp po boys, jambalaya, red beans and rice, dirty rice, king cakes, and pecan praline cookies. It was delicious. The students enjoyed having a break from their regular school day.

Student of the Week, Feb. 9-13

Each week I am going to choose randomly a student to be the "Student of the Week." This week, the "Student of the Week" is Jak. That's Jak with no c. Jak was born in Dahran, Saudi Arabia. He takes classes here and goes to the high school to take Orchestra. He plays the bass. Jak claims that the high school was making him crazy, so he came to the Flint Hills Learning Center under the illusion of freedom. When he's not in school, he enjoys writing, sleeping, and talking with friends. An interesting fact about Jak is that he has double jointed thumbs. Jak also has a way with words. The following is what Jak has to say about himself: "I dance while I'm the only one dancing; usually on my feet, not all the time, but mostly. Words catch me, and rhymes are catchy, but rapping is sketchy. I don't quite like egotism to a beat. I'm more of a poet, I'm into poetry, which I guess is neat."

Flint Hills Learning Center

I'm trying something new for 2009. I am going to try to blog several times a week about what is happening at the Flint Hills Learning Center. I will be adding new features as we go along. Every Monday, we will have a new "Student of the Week." We will include information about the student and their accomplishments made here at FHLC. On the other days, I will just ramble about what is going on here. We have several new things in mind for this new semester.
